you're not from around here, are you?

Hello there, and welcome! ^_^ My name is Steven Wesley.
I am a bookbinder, printmaker, and digital artist.

On the "it's alive" page, you'll find some of my past and recent projects.

I am pleased to share that I was invited by my local library to give a presentation about the history of book binding! The lecture took place this morning, and it had a respectable turnout for the inaugural session of the series. I was looking forward to delving into the research myself, and sharing that information with a captivated audience was a nice treat! Shannon and I went out for bagels and coffee afterwards.
I've been trying to put together a more reliable setup for my printmaking practice. I would like to invest in a small rolling press; it should be more effective than my lever press for intaglio printing. I should also prioritize beefing up my collection of cleaning supplies. I've discovered that I am discouraged from starting to pull prints from a block when I don't have ample supplies to use for cleaning up afterwards! (Something to be said there about my fixation on hygiene...) Anyway, I'll be sure to get those supplies in order before my next round of prints can be made.

We are at one of our favorite coffee shops this morning. I am swaying my head to the music playing overhead. Shannon is sifting through book titles on her tablet, and I am preparing to reach out to a local art restorer for training consultation. Lately, I've been evaluating the differences between various MA programs; namely, an MLIS program versus a generic "Museum Studies" MA program. I think the overall consensus (that I've deduced from Reddit posts and legitimate academic articles) on making this decision relies on what specialization I want to end up in down the line. I am extremely interested in pursuing a role in paper conservation. However, if I find myself having accrued more relevant experience in collections management, I would be similarly happy in playing the role of a registrar, manager, archivist, etc. I'm hoping that with some more hands-on experience in restoration/collections care, rather than exclusively "art handling," that I'll be more likely to receive a position on a conservation staff. Initiatives like "cultural heritage protection" really appeal to me - I'm excited to make contributions to those initiatives someday!
